I picked up the $15 homelite last night and started the teardown and cleaning procedure, I snapped pictures the whole way. You can see some details of the tear down here. I also have the pics, in a better quality, on my flickr account. I will report the teardown here as I have time.
Currently I have done the following:
REmoved the shaft/boom.
Removed the handle.
Removed the cowling and pull start.
remove air filter.
remove carb and tank- squirt carb cleaner into carb and around it, into gas lines to see if they are the source of the issue.
INspect inlet port.
remove muffler. Clean screen. INspect outlet port.
Remove rear cowling, also open up the guts of the engine- it has a plastic cover.... what?!?
Marvel at the antiquated technology that make most engines run, how perfect and wonderful it is in it's simplicity. also how freaking cool it is that burning something makes that thing spin, which then make that thing over there spin, which then makes then will make my bike go. Very cool.
I put that plastic back on before I get shit in there and ruin everything.
Drain and remove gas tank. Make labels for the lines- #1 inlet #2 oulet. They attach to the carb in that order. Also label the wire for teh kill switch before I realize that it's the only wire coming off the thing and I will not forget that it's the kill switch wire... I WILL need it late when I wire up a super cool momentary kill switch on the handle bars.
So far the engine looks better than expected. I'm surprised at how small this thing is. I'm shocked that it is a 30cc or 25cc.
The initial issues with the wacker are as follows:
Starts wonderfully- very easily, 2 or 3 pulls.
Won't run without being on mid choke.
Starts to bog down and has a lack of power.
My diagnosis- the carb probably needs alittle cleaning and a gasket somewhere is not right. If the engine needs the carb open then it's running lean. The bogging down when the throttle is pulled means it's getting too much gas and is killing the spark. It could also be that a gasket somewhere is messed up and thus the engine is loosing ompression. BUT it's not in the front end of the house because the engine starts just fine, it's after it's started and revved up that the issue starts.
Anyone else have any ideas?
